Saturday June 7, 2008 One of the best Club outings of the year is our annual fishing and picnic event at Woodmere Lake in Quinton Township, NJ. If you like to catch fish this is an event you should not miss. Because this event is being held on a free fishing day where a fishing license is not required the Club has invited members of the White Clay Club to also attend this function.
This private lake will be open to fishing beginning at 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fishing is fly fishing only and is catch and release. Some boats and canoes are available. Members are encouraged to bring their own water craft if they desire.
Woodmere Lake contains an excellent population of fish including large mouth bass, pickerel, crappie, yellow perch, and sunfish. Poppers, wooly buggers, and streamers have all proven to be effective in catching fish at Woodmere Lake.
The picnic area will be located at Club member John and Jeri Waters's cottage. The Club will supply hot dogs and hamburgers, beverages, and paper goods for the picnic which will be served at noon. Members may bring a dessert or other dish. A $5.00 donation is requested from each Club member to help with the cost of this function.
Directions: From Salem take Rt. 49 east to Quinton. Currently this area is under construction and you may encounter "detour" signs. Disregard the signs and stay on route 49 through Quinton. As you leave Quinton turn right onto Jericho Road. The entrance to Jericho Road is located just past Bradways Farm Market, across from Niblock's Pork Store. Follow Jericho Road approximately 3 miles. Woodmere Lake is located on the left 0.4 mile past the first stop street you cross. Boat launching is most easily made by turning left onto the dirt road just pass the lake. As you follow the dirt road to its end you should see to the left an area were a vehicle can be backed right to the lake's edge. Entrances to the Lake will be marked with South Jersey Fly Fishers signs.
From Bridgeton follow Route 49 through the town and turn left at the red light across from the Broad Street School. Take the first right approximately 100 yds from the red light. This is Roadstown Road. Follow this road approximately 9.3 miles. You will pass through Roadstown and continue pass Larkspur Lake on the right, and the entrance to the Quinton Sportsmen's Club on the right. Woodmere Lake is located on the right 1/4 mile after passing the power lines. The lake can be seen from the road. The picnic area can be reached by taking the dirt road just past the lake. The easiest boat launch area is from the dirt road located just before the lake. Entrances to the Lake will be marked with South Jersey Fly Fishers signs.
One Fly Tournament As a fun event, again this year there will be a one fly tournament for anglers who want to participate. Anglers will be required to fish using only one fly. The fly the angler selects will be recorded at the start of the tournament. Poppers or flies may be used. If the angler looses the fly that is recorded they must stop fishing in the tournament. A fly can be retrieved from a tree or the water and retied to the tippet if lost and then found. The tournament will begin at 10:00 a.m. end at 12 noon. A point system will be used for scoring the tournament Each sunfish caught is worth 1 point, pickerel are worth 2 points, yellow perch 3 points, crappie 4 points, and bass 5 points. Five bonus points will be added for any bass over 14 inches and any pickerel over 14 inches. Also ten points will be added to the score for anyone catching all 5 species of fish.
